The Executive Chairman Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) – Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede during National Cybercrime Summit shared an encounter and experience in the course of his work, here’s what he exposed – “A 17 -year -old young Nigerian who was arrested for cybercrime and I took interest in him and I engaged him. Why do you do this? I brought him to my house. Why do you do this? And he told me because there is no alternative”.
According to the BOY, He had to pay his school fees. He wanted to be a lesson student. So I just wanted to demonstrate, I wanted him to demonstrate his accuracy, his proficiency. And I gave him my laptop. How do you do? He’s a young man. By the way, he’s not even studying computer science. He’s studying history. But you need to see the proficiency.
EFCC Boss narrate further… “He opened my system, and without giving him my password, he decoded my system. And I was scared! Shocked. I mean, this is not a… That shows know the skills that we have in Nigeria. And that was what informed this. He cautioned that the job of fighting financial crime can’t be left to EFCC allow, it should be a collective responsibility. And before you could say that, he said, sir, what is your, which bank do you use?
I said, no, I’m not going to tell you that. I don’t want to demonstrate that in my office. But he was ready to probably go into my account and, you know. He said, look, you will see me now, good money from one account to another. And I said, no, don’t do that. He said, no, I just want to know how proficient you are.
And you could see that, um, you know, this had to stopped, so that we move on. And that’s why I’m so passionate to ensuring that we deploy those kids to something that our nation will benefit from.
